‘Bomber’ blasts his way to title

7 March 2012

THE individuals billiards final in the Downpatrick & District Billiards and Snooker League between Darren Dornan and Stephen ‘Bomber’ Brown featured arguably the two best players in the league and there literally was standing room only in the Dan Rice Memorial Hall, Drumaness.

Dornan broke off determined to regain the title he lost to Brown last year and showed his intentions with an early 63 break.

However, the reigning Northern Ireland Amateur champion hit back with breaks of 95 and 33 to forge ahead.

Dornan just couldn’t get going and then Brown put together the highest break of the final so far, a 108, to put Dornan under real pressure.

However, Dornan, winner of all his 13 league matches this year, gave his large group of supporters hope when he produced a superlative 108 break which took him to within 41 of Brown.

Moments later, Brown put together breaks of 20 and 21 unfinished to regain the individuals title.

League chairman Seamus McGivern congratulated Brown on winning the final and commiserated with beaten finalist Dornan.

He also thanked John Weston for refereeing the final and congratulated Marty Singh on having the table in immaculate condition for the final.

He also thanked league sponsor Gary Rodgers of Ballynahinch Motor Factors for his continued support.
