Young Dundrum side beaten by North Down

DUNDRUM’S U-15 players bowed out of the Graham Cup on Thursday, falling by 41 runs in the second round.

However, with two players under the age of 11 and another three under 13 the Dundrum players can take pride in their battling performance which saw them defeated by favourites North Down

North Down were put into bat and the Dundrum bowlers definitely bowled too short letting the home side get away to a quick start on a fast outfield.

Greg Stewart, who has impressed  even the first team in net practice, got the first wicket caught by young NCU  under 11 player Spike Davis before Terry Hutley took a wicket with his first ball, caught by the safe hands of Glenn Morrow.

The home have two excellent attacking bats in Adam Curry and Lex Walker and both struggled against Dundrum’s under 13  NCU player Andrew Foster who bowled well in advance of his age, returning excellent figures of two wickets for seven runs off four overs.

Dundrum’s fielding was decent with Eoin Moag, Edward Boyd and Stuart Campbell worthy of mention while young 12 year-old Greg Hutley was impressive as new keeper.

Dundrum have a reasonable attack but lack more slow bowlers to take the pace of the ball so captain Jack Taylor brought on Peter Wilson who created chances and was unlucky not to take more than one wicket. He was well supported by Glenn Morrow.

North Down finished their innings on 135 for five.

Dundrum  knew a steady start would be the key to pulling of a shock victory but after Jack Taylor (8) hit  two nice boundaries he went back and was bowled by the pacey Lex Walker who took a wicket with his next ball.

But Terry Hutley was intent on getting  the villagers back into the game and with Andrew Foster they got a partnership going with Terry playing some superb  cover drives and shots both side of the wicket as the runs flowed.

But Andrew was out  giving man of the match Walker three for seven off four quick overs. Peter Wilson (13) struggled with the pace but helped Hutley with good running and Eoin Moag got off the mark with a cracking boundary.

The total was just too much for Dundrum who finished up on 95 for five off their 20 overs with young Hutley finishing with a very stylish 43 not out.
