WORK on a multi-million pound upgrade of the Ardglass sewage treatment plant is expected to get underway shortly.

Northern Ireland Water has confirmed the news to South Down MP Margaret Ritchie who has been campaigning for an upgrade of the Sheepland Road plant on the outskirts of the village.

Miss Ritchie said NI Water has confirmed that the contract for the work at the treatment plant is nearing completion and that the proposed scheme is on schedule.

“I know there have been concerns about the speed of this much-needed scheme and its delivery and therefore welcome the very positive news that things are moving forward and that the upgrade of the Ardglass treatment plant will commence in the near future,” she said.

“I will continue to pursue this matter until the scheme is completed to ensure it meets the needs of the Ardglass community.”

Councillor Dermot Curran is also delighted the proposed upgrade of the treatment plant will proceed shortly.

“I have been working on this particular project for a number of years with the assistance of Miss Ritchie. Upgrading the plant will resolve the raw sewage problem we have in the area and assist with the future development of the Ardglass area.

“The upgraded treatment plant will ensue there is a system in place which is fit to cope with demand. I would like to thank local land owners for their co-operation and for working with me to ensure that this scheme is delivered.”
