Work begins on new Danske Bank branch in Downpatrick

Work begins on new Danske Bank branch in Downpatrick

14 September 2016

DANSKE Bank has confirmed it has started work on a new ultra-modern branch in Downpatrick town centre.

As revealed in the Down Recorder last April, Danske is moving the short distance across the road from its current base in Market Street to the former NPO store which is being redeveloped.

The bank’s lease on its existing two-storey premises — which is one of the most instantly recognisable buildings in the town centre — is coming to an end.

The new branch is expected to open in late November.

Danske Bank’s district manager, Aisling Press, said the new Downpatrick branch “will be very different” to any other bank in the town and significantly improve the customer experience.

“We have invested in a design, layout and services that will meet the needs and expectations of today’s consumers and businesses. The branch will have a modern and welcoming look and feel, with many convenient self service options available,” she explained.

The bank official also said when customers want to speak to a member of the Downpatrick team they will be able to do so.

Aisling added: “While many of today’s customers do most of their banking online or via their smartphone, branches are still an important part of our customer offering. It’s all about customer choice and providing the best possible service for customers no matter which channel they choose to do their banking.”

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has welcomed plans for Danske’s new branch in Downpatrick and believes its current base could be redeveloped to provide a new town centre boutique hotel.

She continued: “Danske’s investment is welcome regeneration in the town centre and will hopefully serve to provide increased banking facilities for businesses, charities and patrons alike. The opening of new premises also provides a further opportunity for the redevelopment of the current bank site.

“This building, which enjoys protected status, would be a prime opportunity for a new boutique hotel. It is important Newry Mourne and Down Council works alongside the owner of the building and with Invest NI to identify funding opportunities and businesses who have the potential to open a hotel business. This would provide significant economic regeneration and revitalisation to the town centre.”

Her view is shared by councillor Dermot Curran. He said the current bank building has been a feature of commercial life in the town for generation and hopes this continues.

He added: “This is an impressive building which I believe offers potential to provide a new boutique hotel.

We have too many empty business premises for my liking in the heart of Downpatrick and I hope that when bank staff relocate later this year, their former home will be given a new lease of life.”
