Woman killed in Ballynahinch accident

12 July 2011

A PEDESTRIAN has died after a traffic accident in the centre of Ballynahinch yesterday afternoon.

The elderly woman was struck by a lorry as she crossed Windmill Street in the town.

The pensioner was crossing the road just outside the Mace store when she was knocked down and killed by the passing vehicle.

The incident is similar to an accident in almost the same place last year when a man suffered serious leg injuries when he was struck by a lorry.

Sinn Fein councillor Mickey Coogan extended his sympathy to the family of the woman.

“It will come a huge shock to her family, especially at this time of year,” he said.

“The circumstances are still unclear and until they are fully investigated we can say little more. However, given the similarities between the two incident attention may have to be given to the safety of pedestrians in this particular part of Ballynahinch,” said councillor Coogan.
