SOUTH Down Assemblyman Jim Wells is to lose weight to raise money for charity.

He has signed up to a weight loss challenge which gets underway this month and hopes to lose a few pounds as part of the Praxis Care St. Valentine’s Diet Challenge.

Mr. Wells, who is the vice-chairman of the Stormont Health Committee, is determined to take a few inches off his waistline.

The new weight loss initiative, which runs from January 9 until February 23, focuses on three central elements of food nutrition, exercise and cognitive behavioural therapy.

“It is difficult day-to-day to make sure that you are eating the right things, so I’m glad that I could maybe take a few inches off my waist and a few pounds off my weight,” said Mr. Wells.

“I hope that many people in Northern Ireland will take on the challenge and join the Praxis Care St. Valentine’s Diet Challenge.”

Praxis Care, a charity providing services for people affected by mental ill health, learning disability and dementia, want participants to raise a minimum of £160 sponsorship money including a £10 registration fee.

Charity official, Geraldine Andrews, explained the challenge is a fun and healthy way of supporting the work of Praxis Care.

She added: “Once you sign up a pack will be sent out to you which will include a diet sheet, self help tips and a sponsorship form. There will be six weekly sessions provided by Herbalife and Cognitive Behavioural Therapists in venues throughout Northern Ireland.”
