Weekend trouble in town condemned

31 July 2013

KILLYLEAGH councillor Billy Walker has condemned people involved in a disturbance in the Frederick Street area in the town during the early hours of Sunday morning.

It’s understood that up to 20 people were disorderly between 2am and 4am, with the incident believed to be linked to a house party in the area.

Councillor Walker said there are many elderly people who live in Frederick Street and that it’s his understanding that the weekend incident left them frightened.

“People have a right to live in their homes in peace. There are large number of senior citizens who live in Frederick Street and some do not enjoy the best of health.

“Last weekend’s trouble must have been deeply upsetting and I hope that incidents of this nature will not be repeated,” he added.

One concerned resident who contacted the Recorder said the unruly behaviour of a group of around 20 people woke everyone up.

“It would appear that people who were in Frederick Street fell out among themselves resulting in a disturbance,” the resident explained.

“Many elderly people were scared out of their wits and afraid to look outside to see what was going on. The people involved in the disturbance were not teenagers either. They appeared to age in range from early 20s up to 40.”

The concerned resident, who said police were not called to the incident, explained a number of men got involved in a fight with several others throwing missiles at one another.

He added: “Frederick Street is not known for this kind of behaviour and people sincerely hope that what happened last weekend will not be repeated.”
