Wave power delivers Eamon’s letter in jar

15 January 2014

WHEN it comes to sending a long distance message, a Ballyhornan teenager doesn’t need to telephone, text or email — he uses a coffee jar.

Eamon O’Hare threw an Asda Gold coffee jar containing a note with his name, address and telephone number into the sea off Killard on November 1.

Two months and hundreds of miles later, it was found washed up on a beach at Land’s End in Cornwall — the most southerly point of Britain.

It was found by a man called Jack, who was walking his dog, and on January 4 he sent Eamon the following reply:

“Hi Eamon O’Hare. I found your letter contained within a coffee jar. I found the jar while walking my dog on a beach at Land’s End, south-west England.

“As you have taken them and thrown them into the sea, I feel it is the right thing to do to reply. I hope you are well and have a Happy New Year. Thanks Jack.”

Eamon, who celebrated his 15th birthday on Saturday, says he couldn’t believe it when he got the reply, which now has pride of place in the souvenir box which he keeps in his bedroom.

The year 11 student at De La Salle High School was walking at Killard with his 12 year-old sister Kathleen and aunt, Pat Sloan, when he threw the jar into the sea.

“We all threw in coffee jars that day,” Eamon explained. “We thought it would be a good idea to see how far they would travel. I never thought mine would turn up quite so soon. I thought I would have to wait quite a bit longer.”

Eamon says putting messages in jars and throwing them into the sea is a bit of a family tradition. “My mum Mary has done it lots of times, but she has never had a reply.”
