Warnings after oil stolen in villages

10 April 2013

SAUL residents have been advised to be vigilant after a number of oil thefts in the area.

Five hundred litres of oil were stolen from Saul GAC when it was targeted by thieves last month and Saul Community Hall has been raided twice in the last two months.

After the latest incidents local councillor Gareth Sharvin has asked the PSNI to step up patrolling in the area in the evenings in a bid to deter or catch the criminals.

“When I received word of this crime, I was angered that this would be carried out on a facility which is the heart and soul of the community. Crime of any kind is unacceptable in our society and is not welcomed in the Saul area and throughout our district,” he said.

“Speaking with the club chairman and officials, they spoke of there disappointment and how they were taken back by these actions.

“They informed me that the club is taking further security measures to ensure that these crimes cannot happen again. The measures are firstly to protect the club facilities, but most importantly to protect the service it provides to the community.

“I request that all members of the club be vigilant around the club and hall. If they see any suspicious activity in the area, to contact the local police station and report the crime.”

Police are also investigating another two oil thefts from two tanks at premises in the Rossglass Road area of Killough early on Monday, April 8.

Anyone that has any information about either case can contact the police on 0845 600 8000.
