Walker airlifted from Mournes

A WOMAN walking in the high Mournes on Monday afternoon had to be rescued after she suffered a major leg wound.

The woman was walking in the Slieve Donard area when she sustained the injury and the alarm was raised.

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 2.45pm and went to the woman’s assistance.

She had sustained a severe puncture wound to her leg from crampons.

The rescue team responded and due to the challenging access requested the assistance of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter based in Dublin.

The injured walker was assessed at the scene by the mountain rescue team before being airlifted to hospital to be treated for her injury.

 

A total of 14 members of the rescue team who responded to the emergency call were stood down shortly after 5pm.
