Vikings are getting ready for Downpatrick invasion

6 August 2014

A VIKING adventure day will be held at Down County Museum on Sunday, August 17.

The day will include events at the museum along with an excursion to the site of the grave of the Viking leader, Magnus Barelegs, and will end with the chance to take part in a Viking battle.

The event will highlight the Viking heritage of the local area and allow visitors to discover more about the achievements of the Vikings in Ireland. Starting at 2pm, re-enactors from local Viking groups will be at the museum to train participants in Viking battle techniques.

The action will then move off to the railway museum where people can visit the grave of Magnus Barelegs on a steam train from Downpatrick and County Down Railway.

Magnus Barelegs was a Norwegian king who was killed in a battle with Irish warriors in Downpatrick in 1103. Parts of the battle will be re-enacted here and visitors will get the chance to take part.

The Viking adventure day begins at 2pm and lasts until 5pm. Admission is £7 for adults, £4.50 for children and family tickets for two adults and two children are £20. Concessions are £5.
