Unsalted road chaos as snow falls once again

6 February 2013

A NUMBER of motorists were forced to abandon their cars at the Owenbeg Avenue area in Downpatrick yesterday morning following overnight snow.

Councillor Éamonn Mac Con Midhe said the road which links Stream Street with St. Patrick’s Avenue has not yet been taken over by the Roads Service, despite being open for several years.

The road is currently not included on the Roads Service winter gritting schedule, with the Downpatrick councillor explaining this causes major problems for drivers during icy conditions.

“I have raised the issue of Owenbeg Avenue not being gritted with roads officials and they have informed me that the road has not yet been formally adopted. This is an issue which needs to be addressed,” he said.

Councillor Mac Con Midhe said given the volume of traffic which uses the road it is essential it is included on the gritting schedule.

The Downpatrick councillor said it was his understanding that the construction of the road had to be completed to secure formal planning approval for the new cinema.

“Down Council was involved in the campaign for the new cinema and I plan to contact it’s officials to ascertain why the road has not yet been adopted. This needs to happen as soon as possible,” he said.

“Owenbeg Avenue has been open for several years and carries a significant number of vehicles. I am concerned the Roads Service has not yet taken responsibility for it.”
