THE former Ulster Bank in Killyleagh has been put on the market for sale.
The High Street branch closed earlier this year with the move criticised by customers who said the decision would have a major impact on the town.
The branch was one of eight the Ulster Bank closed — a decision which bank officials described as “difficult.”
In a bid to soften the blow, officials said the bank provides customers with more ways to bank than ever before. They explained the way people bank has changed radically over the past few years with a significant reduction in the number of customers using branches.
Rowallane councillor Billy Walker, a former customer of the bank, hopes a buyer can be found for the property.
“This is a prime site and I hope there is a willing buyer to redevelop the building and hopefully provide a number of new jobs,” he said.
Cllr Walker said he hoped the building will not be lying empty for too much longer.
He added: “The building has been empty since last May and I hope the sale will generate interest in the former bank branch which I believe has much to offer potential buyers in the centre of the town.”
