UK/EU trade deal welcomed

SOUTH Down MP Chris Hazzard has welcomed the new deal between the UK government and the EU reduce trade barriers to benefit business, workers and consumers.

Mr Hazzard said the deal also ensures the continued implementation of the Windsor Framework/Irish Protocol.

The deal was agreed last week at the first summit since the British Government withdrew from the EU are what Mr Hazzard described is a “vital moment to reset and rebuild relations” with real implications for the island of Ireland.

He welcomed progress on practical areas such as youth mobility and the SPS veterinary agreement, describing these as “key steps” that will reduce trade barriers, benefitting communities, workers and businesses.

“Critically, this summit also represents a timely opportunity to keep the unique status of the North of Ireland firmly on the agenda,” Mr Hazzard contended.

“The continued implementation of the Windsor Framework and Irish Protocol, and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement ensuring dual access to both the EU Single Market and the British market, remains of central importance to the growth and protection of the all-Ireland economy.

“This dual access must be safeguarded and promoted in the context of global trade challenges, including emerging US tariffs.”

The South Down MP said he noted the summit reiterated support for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, hostage release and humanitarian aid, while reaffirming a commitment to a lasting two-state solution.

But he expressed disappointment about no concrete actions to confront the Israeli Government and “end the genocide of the Palestinian people”.

Mr Hazzard added: “We are concerned by the focus placed on funding increased militarisation rather than on the resolution of conflicts and on peace building.

“This must be a moment for political action, legal accountability and for practical humanitarian intervention that makes a real difference to stop the genocide.”
