Twins on charity trips

TWIN sisters Katelyn and Claire Denvir are preparing to go their separate ways for the first time this summer when they travel across the world in aid of charity.

The 16 year-old students from Downpatrick have each been selected by their schools to take part in development projects in India and Malawi.

They will each spend around two weeks, back to back, on the projects for Saphara and Habitat for Humanity.

Katelyn, who is a sixth form pupil at Assumption Grammar School, will travel to Malawi in June with a team of classmates who will help build a house for family in need.

Two weeks later, as Katelyn begins her homeward journey, Claire, who is a student at St. Patrick’s Grammar School in Downpatrick, will make her way to Malawi with teenagers from Assumption and Down High School. While there, she will teach English to children.

The girls, who describe each other as best friends, admit they are concerned about missing each other during their longest ever spell apart.

But they are hoping their efforts will make a difference to the people they meet.

They are jointly aiming to raise £2,600 for their trips and have already raised £2,100 through a series of events including an abseil down the side of the Europa Hotel and street collections.

They will host a Night at the Races at The Avenue Bar in Downpatrick on Easter Monday night with a street collection the following Thursday. They welcome support on both occasions.
