Tributes paid to Cancer Fund for Children volunteer

21 October 2020

THE Cancer Fund for Children has paid tribute to a Newcastle man, who was a much-loved volunteer.

Kieran Morgan, who died on Friday, October 9, at the age of 78, was a volunteer with the charity for over 23 years.

A former teacher at De La Salle High School in Downpatrick, he and his wife, Evelyn were members of the Mourne Support Group, a fundraising group dedicated to raising vital funds for the charity’s therapeutic short break centre Daisy Lodge in Newcastle.

Over the years Mr Morgan volunteered in many roles, from driving the charity’s mini-bus, stewarding at events including the annual Winter Woolly Walk in Tollymore Forest Park, helping with street collections, selling raffle tickets and organising memorable country music nights.

Joan Burden, Cancer Fund for Children Hospitality Manager, paid tribute to Mr Morgan.

“Kieran was a familiar face to many and one of our longest serving volunteers,” she said. “He was so passionate about the work of Cancer Fund for Children.

“He always went above and beyond to help, whether travelling throughout County Down picking up collection boxes, or delivering posters to advertise our fundraising events throughout the local area.  “He also used his own skills in woodwork to make chairs which he sold and donated all the profits to the charity.”

Joan added: “Kieran was a real ambassador for the work we do at Cancer Fund for Children. We always loved to see Kieran at Daisy Lodge, where he volunteered so much of his time.

“He will be greatly missed by the whole team and our thoughts are with his wife, Evelyn, at this difficult time.”
