Top jazz musician for Downpatrick venue

18 June 2014

ONE of Northern Ireland’s leading jazz musicians is heading to Down Arts Centre on Friday.

David Lyttle, with his band and special guest, American trumpet player Terell Stafford, will be performing at 8pm.

David is an Irish drummer, songwriter, producer and owner of Lyte Records. First heard on BBC Radio 1’s ‘Introducing’ and brought to millions by a Channel 4 TV campaign with HMV in 2012, his hip-hop/soul album, Interlude has been described by the Daily Mirror as ‘incredible’ and by MOBO as ‘exceptional’.

David began performing professionally at the age of four in his family folk group, The Lyttle Family, and has gone on to be described as a ‘one-man industry’ for his work as a performer, producer and record label owner. His collaborations in jazz, hip-hop and dance music range from jazz legend Jean Toussaint to Mercury-nominated rapper Soweto Kinch to Irish recording artist Duke Special. After a touring Interlude in Ireland, Britain and the US in 2012 and 2013, David is now working on his fourth album, which will feature collaborations with artists from a range of genres.

A top-tier modern day icon of jazz, David’s special guest, trumpeter Terell Stafford combines lyricism and a deep love of melody with a spirited, adventurous edge.

This uniquely expressive musical talent allows the musician an ability to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors with a voice that is all his own. His associations include Wynton Marsalis and Diana Krall.

Presented by Moving on Music, David Lyttle and his band members will guide the local audience through a programme of popular standards and originals combining a lively mix of ‘up tempo’ numbers and warm soulful ballads.
