STUDENTS at Newcastle’s Shimna Integrated College heading to Ethiopia in July to work on sanitation projects with international charity Habitat for Humanity have received a major fundraising boost.

Paul Cunningham, the chef at Brunel’s Restaurant in the resort, is offering to cook a six course meal in someone’s home. The prize is one of several up for grabs in a fundraising draw being organised by the Newcastle students. A second prize is £50 meal voucher for Brunel’s.

The students say they are “absolutely delighted” with Paul’s support for the Shimna Habitat draw with tickets available from the school office, Brunel’s and Cunningham’s flowers in Dundrum. The winning tickets will be drawn on May 26.

Shimna team leaders leaders, Suzi Mawhirt and Joan McAllister, say they were “absolutely overwhelmed” with Paul’s telephone call offering such a high level of support for their fundraising.

They say in addition to the wonderful prizes on offer, people who buy tickets will also be supporting a very worthwhile project which will see the Shimna team comprising students and staff travelling to Addis Ababa to work on essential sanitation projects to help meet the housing needs in Ethiopia.

Suzi and Joan added: “The draw gives the whole Shimna and wider local community the opportunity to support this worthwhile project, while aiming for a wonderful experience for themselves with Paul cooking in their home.”
