SIMON Thornton eased to victory in the PGA North of Ireland Championship, presented by Scullion Management Consultants, at St Patrick’s Golf Club, Downpatrick, recently.

Leading by seven shots following his opening round 61, the Royal County Down man followed up with rounds of 67 and 62 the following day to finish nine shots ahead of his nearest rival, Damien Mooney, from Ballyliffin.

Thirty-eight year-old Thornton ped just two shots over the three rounds, ending the tournament on 17 under par.

To emphasise his dominance, Simon carded or matched the lowest score in each of his three rounds.

Collectively, he and playing partner Mooney were 17 under par for their 36 holes on Friday with Mooney matching the winner shot for shot in the final round.

Mooney, with rounds of 68, 69 and 62, grabbed second place on seven under, with Ciaran Molloy, from Blackwood GC, third on level par following rounds of 69, 68 and 70.
