Taking to roads for the Hospice

Taking to roads for the Hospice

KILLOUGH residents have been putting their best feet forward in aid of the Northern Ireland Hospice.

A group of people have been standing up to cancer by completing a six mile sponsored walk and raising a very impressive £1,150.

The walk took place on October 6 with the residents starting out from the Old Inn in Killough and finishing in their neighbouring village of Ardglass.

One of the people who took part was Lorraine Arnold, who has known people close to her who have suffered from cancer. The campaign is very dear to her.

“It was a good day, and great fun,” said Lorraine.

The idea for the fundraising campaign came from Catherine Gunn, who put in a lot of hard work and commitment. However, she stressed it was a group effort which ensured the sponsored walk was a success.

Fundraising for the Hospice in Killough is not new. Martin Reece, known locally as Elvis, has raised a considerable amount of money for the campaign. And he has been joined by members of the local community and regulars at the Old Inn who have been sponsoring and helping out as much as they can.

The Northern Ireland Hospice, which has helped the Killough group, is a local charity for all the Province, that cares for people with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer. The Hospice receives funding from the government, but relies heavily on voluntary donations and legacies to fund.

Louise Swail, one of Northern Ireland Hospice’s community fundraisers said: “Northern Ireland Hospice relies on the support of the local people” and according to Louise, the Killough locals were an amazing help.

“Thank you to The Old Inn local pub, to their regulars, Lorraine, Catherine and Elvis and just to all the locals for there hard and great work.”
