DOWNPATRICK firefighter Martin Healy has been helping to promote the World Police and Fire Games in St. Patrick’s Grammar School.

The Watch Commander at Downpatrick Fire and Rescue Service led a question and answer session on the forthcoming games which are coming to Northern Ireland in August and the work of the Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr. Healy was invited to the school by Year 13 pupils Niall Gilmore and Shauna O’Neill, who are part of the Young Ambassadors Programme set up by the Youth Sports Trust. Both Niall and Shauna delivered a presentation on how the games could benefit Northern Ireland.

Next came the ‘Red High Ultimate Fire Fighter’, a mini-assault challenge set up by the Young Ambassadors with the help of various fire equipment supplied by Mr. Healy. This was based on an event known as ‘The Ultimate Fire Fighter’, which will take place during the Games and is fiercely contested by some of the fittest fire fighters in the world.

The assault course featured a timed 250 metre row, a quick change into and out of a fire fighter’s uniform, followed by a hose roll, a fireman’s lift and then a final sprint around the school with the hose up and down stairs.
