Students enjoy success at biology competition

1 April 2020

STUDENTS at Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle have gained top marks in a major biology competition.

Three A-Level biology students were among the prizewinners in the 2020 British Biology Olympiad.

Andreja Sokolovaite and Annie Rose Sharkey were highly commended for their accomplishment, while Alana Wilson received a commendation. They all also receive a free year of BioNet membership.

The Olympiad is a prestigious international competition to find the most talented young biologists.

It challenges and stimulates gifted students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents.

Joanne Poland, Shimna Head of Biology, said: “The number of students taking part has increased every year with over 9,520 students participating in this stimulating and challenging competition from 668 schools worldwide, so this is a fantastic achievement for our students and we are very proud of them.

“Competing in the Olympiad will encourage the students already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject to continue their study beyond A-Level.”
