A PROFESSIONAL cookery student at the South Eastern Regional College’s Downpatrick campus has completed a two year course in just six months.

Marcin Kryston — originally from Poland — currently lives in Newcastle and works at the Lawnfield House care home in the resort. And while he has completed his two-year course in record time, he still attends the Downpatrick campus on a day release basis.

Marcin enrolled last September to study an NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery and is noted for being passionate about cooking and a perfectionist in all aspects of his work.

“My job has given me the chance to continue doing what I love – cooking,” he revealed. “I first heard about the College from researching catering courses online. This is a great place to start your education and I thoroughly enjoyed learning all about professional cookery.

“My tutor Michelle McCarthy has been a really great mentor to me and I have met a lot of new people. I look forward to coming to class every week. If you are passionate about food then come here.”

Marcin explained he first got into cooking when his sister taught him how to make spaghetti bolognese when he was 12 years old. He then made it for a girlfriend who is now his wife.

His tutor said she has never known a student to finish a course so quickly and efficiently.

Michelle added: “Marcin ensured he achieved 100 per cent in all his bookwork. He was extremely organised and a pleasure to sign off. He will stay in class until the end of this month to support his fellow students and also help run the kitchen.”
