Stevie on fire for Ardglass at Mills

Stevie on fire for Ardglass at Mills

4 January 2012

ARDGLASS marched into Drumaness to the beat of their own drum, bagged the points and bolted home with a contented smile on their faces.

The visitors have set their sights on promotion into the Premier Section with the big boys and a hat-trick from Stevie Deegan, his second treble in as many games, and goals from Liam Mullan, Chris Teggart and Ian Kearney enhanced their ambitions.

Drumaness, who were missing Sean McQuoid, Paul Walsh and young Rory Mason, started well enough and Stefan Mason drifted past two Ardglass defenders on the edge of the box after nine minutes, but was well off target.

Shane Gorman then threaded a peach of a ball into the path of Chris McVarnock, but he was halted in his tracks by a brave intervention from goalkeeper Mark Armstrong.

Ardglass weathered the early Drumaness storm and took the lead with 22 minutes gone when the home side failed to deal with a Teggart cross and Mullan pounced to drill the ball past Ryan Campbell.

It was 2-0 six minutes later when Campbell came under pressure from Michael Magee and was unable to hold on to a cross from Eoin Curran. The ball fell kindly for the impressive Teggart and he poked in his side’s second goal.

Drumaness created another opening for Mason just before the break, but he opted to take the ball under control instead of shooting on sight and the chance was gone.

The Mills did pull one back four minutes after the break when Gavin McEvoy picked the pocket of Ian Kearney in the middle of the field, surged forward and let fly with an unstoppable strike for the goal of the game.

Ardglass retaliated immediately and less than 60 seconds later Kearney made it 3-1 with a header from close range after the Mills defence again failed to deal with a cross into the box.

Deegan stabbed in goal number four when he was left unmarked to get on the end of an inch-perfect free kick from Kearney in the 55th minute.

Deegan volleyed in Ardglass’ fifth goal in the 76th minute when he was perfectly placed to take advantage of another defensive blunder.

He went on to complete his hat-trick in the 85th minute with another clinical finish after combining with Mullan.
