St. Malachy’s storm to Ulster Regional glory

3 December 2014

ST. Malachy’s, Castlewellan, comfortably won the Ulster Regional League final in Garvaghey last Wednesday.

Carrickmore opened the scoring with a point, but St. Malachy’s responded with scores through Luke Savage and Matthew Carvill. After ten minutes, with some good work from Shealan Johnston, Carvill added a crucial goal. St. Malachy’s began to pull away with a goal from Ryan O’Higgins and further points from Savage, Carvill and Justin Clarke.

Carrickmore responded with a goal and put the St. Malachy’s defence under pressure, but good defending from of Rory McMullan, Shane Kearney and Jonathan McVeigh kept the Tyrone men at bay, and left the half-time score at 2-8 to 1-4 in favour of St. Malachy’s.

St. Malachy’s started the second half strongly with a couple of majestic points from Johnston and an excellent goal from Carvill. These scores killed the game as a contest.

Further scores from captain Conor McAnulty, Carvill and Shane Kearney added to the St. Malachy’s lead.

The substitutes from St. Malachy’s had a real impact with two points from Ryan McEvoy, and good goals from Caolan Burns and the impressive Michael Megoran.
