Special scroll in memory William Devlin

16 September 2015

A SPECIAL tribute has been paid to William Devlin by the Downe University of the Third Age organisation.

The tributes were paid at the group’s first meeting of the new season held recently at Downpatrick Golf Club.

William, who was a member of DowneU3A and died last winter, was the driving force responsible for starting the group and spent his final years establishing it.

A scroll marking William’s entry into the National U3A Roll of Honour was presented to his widow Monica by Downe3UA chairwoman Noreen Boyd, with tributes delivered by Leila Jackson (NI3UA chairwoman) and Paddy Killen, a past chairman of Downe U3A and member of the organisation since its inception.

From an initial first meeting attended by around a dozen people, Downe U3A has developed into a strong, lively community of more than 200, with almost 30 various activities for small groups of people who are no longer in full-time employment, but still wish to be involved, outgoing and sociable.
