Shrigley photographic exhibition to be unveiled

24 October 2012

KILLYLEAGH Library is the venue next Wednesday for the launch of major new photographic exhibition entitled Farewell to Dear Old Shrigley.

The exhibition contains approximately 50 images of old Shrigley and is entitled Farewell to Dear Old Shrigley which was the song sung by the mill village workers.

At one time, Shrigley boasted the biggest linen mill in Ireland and the opening of the exhibition by leading photographer and broadcaster Bobbie Hanvey takes place on October 31, the date the mill closed for the last time on Halloween Night, 1930.

The project to reclaim the history of Shrigley will involve preserving and saving old photos, many taken when the original mill village was knocked down between 1968 and 1969.

The publication of a first history of the village has been written by journalist Chris Hagan, with funding support for the Shrigley project provided by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Admission to the launch of the photographic exhibition is free and everyone is welcome. The exhibition will be on display in the library for people to enjoy during November, with next Wednesday’s launch starting at 3pm.
