Shimna students help build homes in Ethiopia

3 August 2016

A TEAM of students from Shimna Integrated College recently returned from Ethiopia where they helped Habitat for Humanity NI build new homes for people in Addis Ababa.

The Shimna group experienced a very uncertain start to their trip, with the sudden cancellation of their outgoing flight through Turkey.

However, with the support of Habitat NI, the students and staff members Joan McAllister and Suzi Mawhirt were soon on their way via an alternative route.

The group is now safely home after extremely hard, but tremendously rewarding work building alongside the families who will benefit from the new housing.

Shimna principal, Kevin Lambe said the trip was made possible with the wholehearted fundraising support of College students, staff, parents, governors and friends.

He added: “We are very proud of our group. The trip has provided a measure of help to the Ethiopian families and has cemented a service ethos in our students, all of whom are inspired to continue fundraising, awareness raising and giving back through physical work.”
