THE Shimna Challenge went from strength to strength with over 300 cyclists taking part this year. 

This was an increase of over 100 riders from the inaugural Shimna Challenge in 2014.

The option of a shorter 30 mile route proved incredibly popular with the recreational and leisure cyclists while the 50 mile route provided a challenge to the keener rider and aspiring racer. 

Shimna Wheelers ensured that there was a good forecast for the day and that the sun was shining on the cyclists who had come from far and wide to take on the challenge.

Prior to the Grand Départ, a minute’s silence was observed for East Antrim Audi CC cyclist Gordon Scott who sadly passed away at a time trial event in County Down during the week.

The riders left Bryansford club to the sound of Robs’ bagpipes! Once out on the road the peloton moved swiftly along the route into a head wind for the first few miles until they reached the food and water stops in Rostrevor and Hilltown. 

With the riders refuelled they continued through the Mournes with a slight tailwind pushing the pace on ever quicker.

Those taking on the 50 mile route got to enjoy the famed Spelga S climb which saps energy from even the strongest of legs.

The 30 mile route cyclists continued on their charge home to the awaiting spread in the Bryansford GAA clubrooms. 

Back in the clubrooms the cyclists enjoyed a well deserved feast of tray bakes, soup, sandwiches, tea, coffee and all other manner of nibbles. Many a cyclist was heard commentating on the fantastic hospitality provided at the finish and the tremendous support provided around both of the routes. 

All in all the Shimna Challenge 2015 was a huge success. The event would not have been such a success without all the people who donated, helped, advised, worked and cycled today and in the planning and preparation stages for this event.

The club are grateful for the support of all the cycling clubs who took part in the Challenge. A special word of thanks must go to Mourne Cycles who provided mechanical support out on the road, the motorbike marshals who safely guided the riders around the routes, Bryansford GAA club for the use of their facility and to our lead sponsor Mauds Café.

Our very own Dennis Ward will be undertaking the 350 mile challenge to cycle from Mizen to Malin Head on Saturday. Dennis is undertaking the venture for two very worthwhile charities Alzheimer’s Society and Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children. The club Time Trial League continues on Friday evening with the Clough to Downpatrick race course and back to Clough route. All members are encouraged to support this event. Sign on is from 6.30pm.
