A SHIMNA Integrated College student has been recognised for her talent in rowing at an awards ceremony at Queen’s University Belfast recently.
Sixth form student Maria Cassidy was awarded a Queen’s Future Stars Award, recognising her dedication to and future potential in the sport.
The annual ceremony celebrates the most promising young athletes across Northern Ireland who are making an impact in their sports.
Maria, who rows for both Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club and Newry Rowing Club, is one of just four recipients selected for the girls’ rowing team in this year’s programme — with the other three honourees coming from Coleraine Grammar School.
In July 2022, the Newcastle student secured a gold medal at the Skiffie World Championships in the Junior Mixed Four category. Her club, Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club, also finished as top club at the event, further highlighting the strength of the team she represents.
A Shimna spokesperson said everyone at at the college and the wider Newcastle community was “incredibly proud” of Maria’s success and looked forward to seeing her continued growth both academically and athletically.
