Shannon selected again to fight Westminster seat

19 November 2014

THE DUP has selected Jim Shannon as the party’s Strangford constituency candidate at next year’s Westminster election.

Mr. Shannon, who was selected at a party meeting last weekend, topped the poll at the last parliamentary election in 2010 with 14,926 votes.

He succeeded Iris Robinson as Strangford MP and is noted as one of the Province’s most hard working politicians.

Mr. Shannon’s constituency includes Saintfield and part of the Ballynahinch area which is part of Down District. Rowallane councillor Billy Walker is delighted the party has chosen the sitting MP to defend his seat next May.

“Jim is the best MP the people of Strangford have ever had. I am in no doubt about that,” he said.

“Since his election in 2010, Jim has participated in 212 Westminster debates which is well above the average for MPs. He has also received answers to 560 written questions and participated in over 63 per cent of all parliamentary votes.”

Councillor Walker said he is confident the DUP will strengthen its presence in the Strangford constituency when voters go to the polls next spring.
