Sex attack in Ballynahinch

8 August 2012

DETECTIVES have made a direct appeal to Ballynahinch residents for “rumour and speculation” surrounding an alleged sexual assault in the town to cease.

The PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit said they needed the public’s help in identifying two men close to the scene, but that unfounded speculation could damage their investigation into the assault of the teenager.

It was reported that the 17 year-old was assaulted in the Lisburn Road area of the town on the Sunday morning of July 29.

Detective Inspector Geoff Pogue said: “We believe that there has been a lot of rumour and speculation surrounding this incident. This runs the risk of potentially harming a serious crime investigation.

“It is also very upsetting to the victim and the victim’s family.”

Detective Inspector Pogue said two men were seen in the vicinity of the area the alleged attack took place and police needed to speak to them as they may have useful information.

“The first male was described to us as having short fair hair, slim build wearing a dark coloured T-Shirt with a large square printed design,” he said. “He was also wearing jeans and baseball type boots.

“The second male was described to detectives as having dark hair, clean shaven, slim and wearing a black T-shirt, light coloured trousers and shoes.

“We would ask anyone who has any information to share it with the investigating officers at the Rape Crime Unit. They can be contacted on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Police last night announced that a 20 year-old man had been arrested in conection with an alleged sexual assault.
