SENIOR health figures attended a recent meeting at Mainstay DRP’s Downpatrick base.

South Eastern Trust chief executive Roisin Coulter was joined by Rachel Gibbs, the organisation’s Director of Mental Health Services and Learning Disability and Psychological Services.

The event was hosted by South Down MLA Colin McGrath.

He said Mainstay DRP has provided an essential service within the Down area for many years, with the the need for these services increasing over time.

“Whether that is through their respite services or community hubs, the charity has made a huge contribution to our area and supported countless families through what can be a very challenging time,” said Mr McGrath.

“I was delighted to welcome Roisin and Rachel to Mainstay to discuss its future. It is evident that the model of service delivery for those with learning disabilities is evolving and health trusts are re-examining how they move away from the ‘homes’ of the past and move towards more integration with our local communities.”

The South Down MLA said the inquiry into Muckamore Abbey Hospital shone a spotlight on this and said he has every confidence that Roisin, Rachel and the entire South Eastern Trust team will do all they can to make this transition as seamless as possible.

“The community and voluntary sector have a critical role to play in achieving that optimal service delivery,” Mr McGrath continued.

“What we see in Mainstay is a real passion for care for those with learning disabilities and their families and that simply could not happen were it not for the tireless efforts of the committee headed up by Rosemary Gorman and the team on the ground headed by Cyril McKinney.”

Mr McGrath added: “I look forward to the future to see how this model of service delivery evolves to ensure the very best outcomes for those who make use of these services and their families.”
