Schooldays past and present are the subject of new book

YOUNG and old in the district have been reflecting on what are billed the best days of the your life. The All Together Now: Going to School in County Down book has been put together by three schools in County Down with the assistance of past pupils, teachers and Down County Museum.

Downpatrick Primary School, Our Lady and St. Patrick Primary School, Downpatrick, and Millisle Primary School took part in the project which was EU-funded.

The booklet, which is available from the museum free of charge, looks at topics such as first schooldays, the daily routine, playtime, changing times and punishments over the years. It also looks at how the three schools developed or amalgamated.

The book and an accompanying film form part of a current exhibition at Down Museum, which aims to show the common experiences of children today and in the past and the shared heritage of communities throughout County Down and beyond.

The booklet is dotted throughout with quotes from current pupils, past pupils and teachers.
