AFTER two years of fundraising, a group from Shimna Integrated College has helped to build two homes for the poor of Delhi in India.
The recent trip was made by 13-strong group from the Newcastle school has part of its Habitant for Humanity project.
The aim behind the international charity is to raise funds and to practically help in building housing for those in need. The group raised money to pay for the building materials and the fares.
The project was supported by the whole Shimna community as well as friends and families of students and staff involved.
From staff making hotdogs at break-time, running a dog agility show, a church coffee morning or abseiling down Belfast Castle, the money was raised through numerous activities as well as bun sales, sponsored walks and raffles.
The Shimna group worked hard during their trip, dodging monsoon showers and digging out foundations for two new houses in the Bawana district.
They also distributed teddies, dolls and blankets kindly made by Newcastle Presbyterian Church’s KnitWits group
The students’ group comprised Leigh Dillon, Jenny Drummond, Steven McKibben, Andrew Taylor, Leonie Forde, Hannah Fitzpatrick, Laura Greene, Ben Anderson and Ben Kearney, who were accompanied by staff members Suzi Mawhirt, Alicia Rooney, Joan McAllister and Aidan McIlmurray.
