SAUL GAC’s All-Ireland-winning ballad group were the special guests at a recent function at the Down County Museum to celebrate their success.

The local singers beat off talented competition at the Scór final held in Killarney last month to bring home the prestigious title.

The winning group included Gareth McGreevy, his sister Angela, Katelyn Rose Denvir, Catherine McGrath and Grainne Laverty who wowed the judges with their songs

The Song of Donegal and Walking on Waves.

The quintet were praised for their stunning success at the museum reception by Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairman Mickey Ruane who expressed his “pride and delight” at their achievements.

“April 2 was a great day for our district as Saul GAC became All-Ireland Scór Sinsear Champions,” he said.

“I would like to commend Gareth, Angela, Grainne, Caithlin and Catherine on the hard work and commitment they have put in to achieve this win at national level.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the families, mentors and club that made this great win possible.”

Councillor Ruane said the local authority is the third largest of Northern Ireland’s 11 new super councils, with a population of around 171,500 people.

The chairman added: “Rural communities and clubs such as Saul GAC are essential to the new council’s vision of a district where communities are cohesive, actively engaged and offer a good quality of life for the young and old. It is when we work together collaboratively and in partnership that we secure better outcomes for all.”

Those who attended the recent reception were treated to a performance from the winning act, which ended a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable evening.
