THE ballad singers from Saul scooped the Co Down Scór na nOg title on Sunday.

The girls carried off the title after competing in the county finals in St. Patrick’s Grammar School on Sunday evening. Saul will now go forward to the Ulster finals in Dunloy on Saturday, December 7.

Over 500 people attended the event, the largest audience in recent years, who were treated to an exciting night of competition in the seven disciplines.

At the end of a very close and exciting evening the county champions were named as:     Ceili Dancing — Ballyholland

Solo Singing   — Gavin Gribben, Mayobridge.

Recitation — Michael McNally. Rostrevor.

Instrumental Music — Cumann Pheadar Naofa, Warrenpoint.

Leíriú   — Rostrevor.

Ballad Group — Saul.

Set Dancing     — Ballyholland.

A quiz was held earlier in the day in Bright Club with 11 teams taking part in the new format. After a very close run competition, the reigning All Ireland Champions Glenn retained their title with Mayobridge and Clonduff in second and third place.

The four entries in solo singing, ballad group, instrumental music, ceili and set dancing got a extra bonus when the Down County Cultural officer announced that they have been invited to attend auditions for the forth coming TG4 programme Scór Encore.

County Chairman Seamus Walsh thanked all involved and especially the principal and staff of St. Patrick’s Grammar School, and host clubs Downpatrick and Bright.
