TEN teams from five local primary schools gathered at the Downshire Hospital’s Great Hall recently for the 22nd Credit Union Schools’ Quiz.

The local heat of the Irish League of Credit Unions youth activity was organised by the Credit Union’s Downpatrick branch, with the team from Saul’s St. Patrick’s Primary winning Group A, with St. Brigid’s PS winning Group B.

Winning team members from St. Patrick’s Primary were presented with the Pat Magorrian Shield, while the winning St. Brigid’s team received the Michael Scallon Shield, named in honour of the founder member of Downpatrick Credit Union.

In addition to the shields, the winning team members each received a £10 voucher for Xtravision, with everyone who took part in the quiz receiving pens, pencils, water bottles and whistles

Over 25,000 schoolchildren under the age of 13 competed in over 300 venues across Ireland in the annual Credit Union quiz. The questions, compiled by primary school teachers, covered topics including geography, history, music, literature and sport.

The teams from St. Patrick’s and St. Brigid’s have both qualified for the next stage of the competition which is being held in March next month. Success here will book a place in the national finals being held in Dublin.
