Sarah asking people to abseil for charity

17 February 2016

NEWCASTLE woman Sarah Breen is urging people across the district to abseil down Belfast City Hospital’s tower block to help raise money for the Friends of the Cancer Centre.

This April, charity supporters abseil 190 feet down the famous yellow tower block with Sarah, who took part in the challenge last year, encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.

“Working for Friends of the Cancer Centre I get to see just how important the charity’s work is and the role it plays in supporting local people with cancer,” she explained.

“I also get to see people across Northern Ireland do amazing things to raise money for the charity and, inspired by our supporters, last year I decided I would face my fear of heights and take on the abseil myself.”

Describing the abseil as “scary but incredible at the same time,” Sarah is encouraging anyone thinking about signing up for the April 9 and 10 event to go for it.

“Not only is it a great event to be part of, but all money raised will make a real difference to the charity and the incredible work it does to support local patients.”

Based at the heart of the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital, Friends of the Cancer Centre is one of the leading cancer charities in Northern Ireland, working to support cancer patients, their families and carers through key projects in the areas of clinical care, patient comforts, and research.

The charity is currently funding 31 additional staff in the Cancer Centre, including doctors, nurses and researchers and is committed to raising at least £5m over the next three years to fund on-going and new projects which will continue to support local cancer patients.

Registration for the April abseil is £40 per person and each participant is asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £150 for the charity. Participants must be over 14.

Anyone who would like to take on the tower abseil and help raise vital funds for the cancer charity can find out more at www.friendsofthecancercentre.com or telephone (028) 9069 9393.
