Santas bring Christmas cheer to charity event

12 July 2011

THE annual Saintfield Christmas Charity Ride took place on Saturday, with over 200 Santas on horse back raising money for underprivileged children in Uganda and Rwanda.

Funded by Rock Ministries, those taking part began the day with a mulled wine and mince pie reception at Saintfield Livestock Mart, and a best dressed Santa competition, before the Ride headed into the town at 12.30pm.

Greeted by crowds of well wishers, Saintfield Main Street was a sea of red, with George Fawcett’s magnificent horse drawn carriages leading the way.

Pulling up at the Christmas tree, Panache was keeping the crowds entertained and Myrtle Drury led the carol singing. The ‘real Santa’ left his carriage to meet and greet all the children and was joined by Down Council chairman Dermot Curran.

Organiser Joan Cunningham has extended thanks to everyone who helped make the day a success, especially Brian and Geoffrey Murphy of Saintfield Livestock Mart.

Joan would like any child under the age of 12 who took part in the ride contact her as soon as possible on 028 9751 9030 or 07775 860744.
