Saints lose to league leaders

27 February 2019

SAINTFIELD United hosted league leaders Aquinas in a much-anticipated clash of two of the top teams in the league.

It was the visitors who drew first blood when the first corner of the game was kept alive at the back post and struck into the net to make the score 1-0.

The Saints tried to get their passing going, but were snuffed out by their opponents who didn’t want to allow the hosts to settle.

They continued to cause trouble from set-pieces and Saintfield paid the price when once again a free kick was kept alive and the visitors were first to the second ball to make the score 2-0.

Saintfield now faced a great uphill battle, they kept trying to play their football, but chances were few and far between for both sides.

Saintfield came out fast in the second half, looking to put their opponents onto the back foot and get back into the game.

They thought they had when some good play down the right led to a shot from Adam Childs that hit the underside of the bar and appeared to cross the line, but not in the eyes of the referee who ruled against the hosts and the scoreline stayed 2-0.

The game was even throughout, the only other noteworthy chance falling to James Sofley who couldn’t find a way past the Aquinas ‘keeper.

The Saints will be looking to bounce back and get their revenge when they travel to Rathmore to face the same opponents this weekend.
