Saintfield residents take to streets in big clean up

10 October 2012

TWELVE bags of waste were collected by enthusiastic volunteers during a litter pick in Saintfield last weekend.

A number of people joined in the event organised by Saintfield Town Regeneration Committee in co-operation with Tidy Northern Ireland.

The litter pick, which also collected five bags of waste suitable for recycling, enjoyed perfect weather conditions.

The volunteers concentrated their efforts within the town’s 30mph limit, with Tidy NI providing a range of equipment, including thick gloves, long-handled pickers and plastic bags.

During the event, litter was also removed from the Downpatrick Street car park where overhanging shrubs were pruned. Down Council agreed to remove the waste collected last weekend.

Last Saturday morning’s event was organised by the town’s regeneration committee as a trial for next year’s so-called “big spring clean” when Saintfield will join with towns and villages all over the country as part of Tidy Northern Ireland’s big anti-litter initiative.

Councillor Robert Burgess has praised all those involved in the weekend clean-up and praised their community spirit. He hopes the efforts of those involved will be appreciated by the people of Saintfield whom he hopes will now think twice about ping litter.

“What we need in Saintfield is pride in our community and the town’s regeneration committee is leading the way,” he added.
