Safety scheme put in place

21 May 2014

A NEW neighbourhood watch scheme is being proposed for one of Downpatrick’s most populated areas.

Residents who live at the Saul Road are being asked to weigh in with their support for the scheme which is designed to make the area safer and to deter would-be criminals.

Scheme promoter, Mr. Brendan Mulhall, said residents want to have an area where everyone feels safe and secure.

“If that means a few local residents taking on a little extra responsibility then we are happy to do that,” he said.

“We would like as many as possible to sign the forms requesting this scheme’s development and will be going door-to-door soon to get support from local people.”

Mr. Mulhall said the district’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership will provide support and networking opportunities. He said neighbourhood watch signs will also be erected in the Saul Road area.

Downpatrick councillor Colin McGrath has welcomed news of the initiative designed to make this part of the town safer.

“This is an excellent scheme that brings together a sense of community amongst residents to ensure everyone’s safety,” he continued.

“Gone are the days of this being viewed as a ‘nosey neighbour’ initiative. This is about protecting people’s property, looking out for elderly residents and creating a sense of community within an area that aims to help residents have a better quality of life.”

Councillor McGrath said he fully supported the proposed initiative and encouraged residents to lend their support.
