A NEWCASTLE man who broke into a restaurant last month to steal drink has been jailed for six months.

Edmund Thomas Marks (30), of Donard Place, damaged two windows when he and two other Newcastle men broke into the Percy French restaurant on July 14, Downpatrick Court heard last Thursday.

Also before the court were Shane Patrick Tweedie (37), of Burrendale Park Road, and Jerome Anthony Tweedie (22), of Donard Place. They will be sentenced at a court on September 5.

The court was told the three men had been drinking together and decided to break into the restaurant when they ran out of drink.

Marks was also charged with resisting police on April 30. The court heard that when arrested he threatened to urinate in his cell and spat and shouted abuse at police.

A defence solicitor told the court the misuse of alcohol was the problem for Marks and that he used alcohol to escape from boredom.

District Judge Greg McCourt told Marks: “Since I have come to Downpatrick Court you have come before me on numerous occasions.

“There is no way the public or the police can accept your behaviour.”
