Presentation night at Spa GC

Presentation night at Spa GC

28 November 2012

GWYNETH Cordner and Michael Megoran have captured Spa’s prestigious Golfer of the Year titles at the end of a fiercely competitive season, despite the difficult playing conditions created by the one of the wettest summers since the club was formed way back in 1907.

It was a remarkable personal achievement for both players with Michael taking the title for the second successive year, while Gwyneth, who picked up three other cups, only started playing golf when she joined Spa four years ago.

Receiving their trophies at the club’s annual presentation night last weekend Michael said he was delighted — and relieved — to retain his title, despite a consistently close contest with his nearest rivals, while Gwyneth said it was a “great honour” to win Golfer of the Year and paid tribute to the wonderful support given to her by all the lady members and club officers.

Club captains John Abernethy and Lynne Robinson expressed their sincere thanks to all Spa members and staff who had contributed to the success of the club over the past year by their dedication and commitment.

As they formally brought the curtain down on another playing season the Captains described how honoured they felt in being chosen to lead the Club during the year and said the spirit of Spa had prevailed in the face of such daunting weather conditions.

Lynne revealed the magnificent sum of £3,637 had been raised at a summer event for her designated charity — Cancer Research — and that this figure had been boosted by £620 by a Night at the Races and birthday party organised by the club’s lady secretary, Heather Edgar.

The lady captain also thanked Maureen Hanna, who had presented a trophy for runner-up in the Golfer of the Year competition.

John Abernethy said Spa was, traditionally, a great club for supporting their captains and as a result he had had a “fantastic and extremely enjoyable” year in office.

Both captains extended their good wishes to their successors, Sally-Ann Douglas and Jack Hood, in 2013.
