Portico to welcome Henry Girls

Portico to welcome Henry Girls

8 March 2017

ENJOY gorgeous Celtic harmonies with the Henry Girls at Portico on Saturday.

Donegal sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen McLaughlin have created a sound that has been been nurtured by their Celtic roots but is not restricted by it.

Steeped as they are in tradition, they have also personalised their music with a bright, refreshing approach.

The Henry Girls are known for their tight three-part harmonies, matched by soulful musicianship across a range of instruments including harp, fiddle, accordion, ukulele and piano.

This spring sees them release their sixth album, produced again by Calum Malcolm (Blue Nile, Heidi Talbot) called ‘Far beyond the stars’.

Amongst the rave reviews the Henry Girls have received, is one from Music News Nashville in the US: “Get ready to listen, folks, because this is something special. Every now and then, you run across something so uniquely different that you just have to shout it from the mountaintops. The Henry Girls are one of those musical acts that you just want to tell people about – as many as you can...The writing is first rate, as is the instrumentation, and those harmonies. I can’t say….or write enough. So, I will quit. Go seek this one out yourself. You will be glad you did.”

Eamon Carr, from The Evening Herald, wrote: “These sisters have a sensational talent. The quality of their harmony singing goes beyond mere technique. They possess an unerring ability to blend tone and resonance in a seamless fashion.”

On their Louder Than Words album, BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris said: “It’s absolutely gorgeous. This album has been on constant repeat on my home system.”

Saturday’s performance at Portico in Portaferry starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £12 and are available from www.porticoards.com or from the Rock Bakery in Portaferry.
