Portaferry looking forward after council funding inject

9 March 2016

PORTAFERRY has received a tourism funding boost from Ards and North Down Borough Council.

Over £30,000 is being distributed between Portaferry Gala Committee, Portaferry Sailing Club, Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership, new arts and heritage centre Portico and the Narrows Triathalon Club.

The money will be used for events such as the annual summer Gala festival, a Sails and Sounds festival, the Strangford Lough Festival and Skiffieworlds events, the opening of

Portico and the new Portaferry Triathalon.

Portaferry councillor Joe Boyle welcomed the funding package announced yesterday.

“Once again the council has demonstrated its desire to maximise the tourism potential that Portaferry and the Ards Peninsula has to offer — with it’s prime location on the shores of Strangford Lough and its picturesque, breathtaking views within an area of outstanding natural beauty as well as an area of special scientific interest,” he said.

“The funding awarded to the various groups is equal testimony to the expertise and unwavering support that there is for each other within these respective groups.

“Combined, this creates a vibrant, proud and welcoming community that is clearly driven by its desire and enthusiasm to attract tourists and visitors to the location. From this, a strong local economy is built for the benefit of everyone.

“I was delighted to work alongside these groups and am always amazed at the level of energy that they bring to their discussions and to their applications. I also admire the volunteers that are prepared to assist with the various events.

“ I would also pay tribute to the council officers and staff involved with the Tourism Events Grants for their ongoing assistance, advice and guidance.”
