Portaferry group wins ‘spirit’ award

10 December 2014

A PORTAFERRY group has won a £1,000 award for encouraging community spirit in the village.

Portaferry Community Collective won the prize in the Housing Executive’s Rural Community Awards competition for 2014.

The Community Collective has a vision of their future and funded a community plan to help formalise this. The group communicates their wide range of initiatives to the community through newsletter, e-mail, local FM and parish bulletins.

The group recognises Northern Ireland’s growing ethnic diversity and to promote this the village hosted a Taste of Europe food event. They have also organised a health fair, support other community groups to secure funding to run events and work with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) on anti-social behaviour.

Recognising the social needs of older members of the community the Portaferry Community Collective contributes towards an annual Christmas dinner for the seniors group.

For younger members of the area they encourage Portaferry Youth Voice which represents young people in the community.
