Politicians set for eating contest

2 December 2015

TWO local politicians are limbering up for a major eating challenge this Friday to raise money for one of the Province’s leading charities.

Rowallane councillors Billy Walker and Terry Andrews will be the focus of attention in Ballynahinch town centre this Friday evening when they embark upon a culinary quest to down a six foot long roll.

The heavyweight politicians have been asked by Subway to take part in the eating challenge to raise money for Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke.

Having gone toe-to-toe in the boxing ring and chased each other over the golf course, the politicians can’t wait to begin a challenge they are secretly delighted has arrived.

The Rowallane politicians will start eating at either end of a six foot long sub roll and the person who gets to the middle first will be the winner.

A tough task for many but the duo, who have never hidden their love of food, are ready for the challenge which forms part of Ballynahinch’s Christmas lighting programme.

Subway is looking after the sponsorship for the charity challenge so all the two politicians have to do is turn up and wrap their chops around the six foot sub, with both confident of tasting victory and  helping Subway raise lots of cash.

The politicians say they are more than willing to help raise funds for a charity which is literally at the heart of the community. Each day in Northern Ireland, 10 people suffer a heart attack, with another 11 having a stroke.

Councillor Walker said he is confident of victory this Friday and that he will reach the halfway point in the six foot challenge long before his competitor.

“There is only going to be one winner,” he declared confidently. “We both can’t wait to get stuck in and I have no doubt that I have this one in the bag.”

Councillor Andrews believes he can chomp his way to victory and that his close friend and colleague will have to settle for second best this time.

He added: “I have had plenty of training in this particular field and would regard myself as something of a specialist. I will be eating Billy under the table.”

Friday’s eating challenge starts at 5pm and anyone who would like to make a donation is asked to visit https://www.justgiving.com/Subway-Ballynahinch.
