Perfect Peter’s Kilmore double kills off Comber

Perfect Peter’s Kilmore double kills off Comber

8 February 2012

KILMORE entertained Premier Section leaders Comber Rec at Robert Adams Park in the second of the Clarence Cup on Saturday and eased through to meet Nortel in the next round with a comprehensive win.

The pitch was soft and wet, but it was Kilmore who adapted to the conditions better and they progressed in the competition with impressive displays throughout the team.

Comber were missing the influential Magennis from the middle of the park and lined up with a conservative 4-1-4-1 as they looked to contain Kilmore early on.

However, Kilmore were in no mood to hold back and had a early goal controversially ruled out when Traynor was deemed to be in an offside position and interfering with play from Galbraith’s free-kick.

Nevertheless, on 20 minutes the marauding Peter Telford glided gracefully into the 18, twisted and turned and fired across the Comber ‘keeper into the net to give Kilmore a well deserved lead.

Traynor and his strike partner Mark Holland went close to extending Kilmore’s lead before the break, but had to settle for a single goal lead at half-time.

The second half started as the first had finished with Kilmore on the front foot. Stephen Galbraith, who had an influential game on the left and caused Comber a headache all afternoon, was probing and the second goal wasn’t far away.

It was Telford again, who put in a tremendous shift all afternoon, pounced on a defensive error to double Kilmore’s lead.

Chances came and went for Kilmore and late on Comber pulled one back from a corner through Adam Whitehead. All panic was soon put to rest when in the final minute Steven Rogan broke from midfield and produced an exquisite chip to kill of any hope of a Comber comeback.
